Graphic Design: Housing in Vienna Book
Part of the commission for the exhibition design Housing in Vienna is the design of the concomitant publication. It just arrived from the printing company. The basic idea of the design was to create something like a small fibula of contemporary housing projects in Vienna, including small but precise plans and sections. The two color print and the slightly yellowish color of the opaque paper was supposed to resemble old 19th century fibula in its haptic qualities wilth the graphic design of the chapter prefaces depict contemporary computational design.
This combination proved to be very successful, and also the paper quality, that was a crucial point of the concept, performed even better than expected, showing every single slight detail of the plans. The division of the book follows 7 chapters dealing with various typologies of housing such as The Habitable Peripherie, Themed Housing Estates, Garden Settlements, City Within a City, The Urban Context, and so on. The preface of the book deals with the historic dimension of Viennese social housing rooted in the Red Vienna of the era between first and second world war.The book features projects by Coop Himmelb(l)au, Delugan Meissl, Querkraft, BKK3, the Next enterprises, Albert Wimmer, Jean Nouvel, PPAG, Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler, Artec and many more. The book will be available at the exhibition.
