ACADIA 2008: SILICON + SKIN
Matias del Campo will hold a lecture on the submitted paper
Speculations on Tissue Engineering and Architecture at the prestigious
ACADIA conference. ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) is the oldest conference on the issue of design and computation, established in in the early 80ies. It fosters the research and critical thinking regarding the use of computers in architecture, planning and building science. It has proven very often the source of novel ideas in digital design techniques and a pool for discoursive thinking and speculation.
The ACADIA 2008 Conference fosters design work and research from the worlds of practice and academia which lie at the intersection between design, biology and computation. More specifically, this conference seeks to identify and examine current trends in digital design technologies developed and applied in the framework of biologically inspired processes and digitally assisted sustainable design. SPAN´s paper Speculations on Tissue Engineering and Architecture will be presented in the session on Concepts of Nature and Technology/ Biomimetics:
The main aim of this paper is to speculate on opportunities inherent in the field of tissue engineering, for possible applications in the discipline of architecture. Engineered solutions based on the discoveries within the discipline of Tissue engineering can yield novel building materials and construction methods. These entire conjectures mean a different approach to the trajectories of architectural production, abandoning mechanical solutions for architecture problems in favor of biological, organ driven architectonic conditions.
Additionally Matias del Campo will also be the moderator of the sesion on Nonstandard Production techniques.
