SPAN will be part of the exhibition Rouse[d] which will open its doors Saturday September 26st, at 555 Gallery, 5716, Michigan Ave, Detroit. The show is comprised of two parts: Part one covers the results of the Rouse[d] competition and shows the best results. The second part, that includes the work of SPAN, shows a series of innovative architecture practices that encompass the universe of digital design. Among the long list of participants are the likes of Marc Fornes (theverymany), Skyler Tibbits, Tom Wiscombe (Emergent), Andrew Kudless (MATSYS), Alisa Andrasek (Biothing), Cage Clemenceau, Roland Snooks (Kokkugia) and Chris Perry & Marcelyn Gow (Servo).
After a seamless setup of the show Sandra and I attended the opening of the exhibition Housing in Vienna at the Palazzo Tron in Venice. The day was filled with activities as also the main venue, the Venice Biennale opened the same day. The show in the Palazzo Tron, dedicated to the history and presence of subsidized living in Vienna was opened with speeches by three persons: the Viennese Stadtrat Ludwig, the director of the Wohnbauforschungsinstitut Dr. Wolfgang Förster and the representative of the UIAV, the University of Architecture Venice, Liliana Padovani. The opening was a huge success. We were lucky with the weather as the reception took place in the wonderful garden of this Baroque palazzo. Just as the reception finished it started raining cats and dogs.
Well, its not hard to guess which is the best place in the US for an exhibition about Wineries. Right, you got it: Napa Valley....give the man, lady a penny! After a successful stint in fantastic Los Angeles the show The Austrian Winery Boom moved on to Napa, the US winemaking heartland. I joined for the exhibition opening and a little winery tour through Napa.
The exhibition, curated by the Architekturzentrum Wien is on show in Copia, an institution dedicated to Wine, Food and the Arts. Frankly said I was surprised about the extent of the rather modestly sounding institution. It´s a full fledged Museum, about the size of the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, or the Wexner Center. I loved the wonderful, diagonal garden, featuring a full range of fruits and vegetables, used in the Museums fabulous Restaurant (It better be...remember: Wine, Food and the Arts!). The beautiful Cherry Blossom was almost unbearable. The Garden was filled with the scent of fresh spices and flowers. Here are some images of the exhibition setup for the show FLOAT in the Gallery Zeitkunst in Kitzbühel Tirol. The show comprises of works by Fritz Biedermann, Franz Schubert & SPAN. The main issue we wanted to show was our works dedicated to explorations into the field of botany to understand underlying rules.
This rules can be explored for example with tools like Xfrog, a software applying rule based systems and algorithms to create organic entities. We used the tools to explore issues such as tropism, branching, creeping and more as main design components in architecture design. Other issues included in the exhibition are explorations on floral morphologies and cellular aggregations. Here are a couple of images of the test assembly we put together yesterday. We tested if everything works as we planed, and how long it needs to setup a portion of the exhibition "Housing in Vienna". The record for building up one pod was set by Phillip, one of the AzW´s hands, with 3min and 42 sec. The Podium of the Architekturzentrum Wien (AzW) doubled as impromptu exhibition space, providing enough space for one colony which at the end had a size of 20ft by 9ft. This colony consisted of eight individuals. Now the entire population consists of forty pods, you get an image of the final appereance.
Today we assembled the first prototype of the pods for the exhibition Housing in Vienna. The pieces fit perfectly into each other. We tested a couple of variations of how to include the illumination within the bumps of the pod. The fabrication of the shells will be finished this week, so that the guys at the AzW can finish applying the graphic designs on the transparent top of the pod. Early January we are going to assemble an entire colony of pods to demonstrate the exhibition setting to the Vienna housing authorities who commissioned the exhibition design.
Dear Friends and Neighbors
Join us for the opening venue of the exhibition "Exitus, everyday death"
At the Künstlerhaus Vienna, Austria. Friday October 19th starting 7pm
Death, traditionally a subject of the arts, is covered in this extensive exhibition in numerous artists positions, juxtaposed with pieces out of the historic collection of the city of Vienna´s funeral home. The broad approach, from the pompous funerals of Empress Zita and popstar Falco, from the Vanitas Still Life to Body Art, from classic painting to Thanatopraxie, from skulls as collectibles for the "Wunderkammer" to the skull as a mirrorball, from experimental movies to videoinstallations, from the funeral march to Gothic-musicclips, circumfences a system of relationships depicting the positions of death from rituals and ceremonies to processes and notions in popular culture.
SPAN (Matias del Campo & Sandra Manninger) will present in this show the animation "Population Zero" depicting organic growth and decay patterns.

Many thanks to our sponsor, greenworks organic software.
So, all the panels are now in the Workshop of the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W) most of them are finished, only the graphic parts have to be applyed yet. Here you can see a couple of images of the Module C, the smallest of the three modules. The bottle fits pretty good into the craddle that was included in the vacuforming process.
Today night we have been running a couple of illumination tests with the first Prototype of the exhibition module.
The Module has been doing good so far though the lower shell is of a thinner material than the final ones will be. The illumination test was done with LED lights. We will do some more light test with neon and then deside which one will make it into the exhibition setting. Obvioulsy LEDs have a couple of advanteges: Small, cold, low on energy consumption and I like the white slightly blueish color.
By now we are working on the Reflector that will be seating underneath the module and has the task to increase the light output and scatter the light in a smooth way. This ones on the image below where the first try in foamboard. I cutted already a new one in mirroring mylar, we will check this one tomorrow. The Lasercutting turned out really nice.
A mood rendering of the ACF by night, when there are no visitors around......so only the surveillance cameras will see it like this..
Here is an image of the first shells. The transparency is even better than I expected, no opaqueness. Tomorrow we will assemble a first complete prototype to check out how the illumination looks best, and how we can handle the connection detail between the panels best.
